Mataram is a city and the capital of the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara. The city is an economic, cultural, and education center of the province, hosting all public universities, the main airport, and main government offices. Mataram has a rich history, with the city being the chief city of the Muslim kingdom of Mataram on Lombok until the end of the 18th century. The city is home to several palaces built by the Balinese sultan and has a population of mostly Sassaks, who are Muslims of Malayan ancestry. Mataram is a trade center for agricultural goods and has small-scale industries such as food processing, boatbuilding, and rice milling. The city is surrounded by the West Lombok Regency and lies on the western side of the island of Lombok, Indonesia
