Brihadishwara Temple

Temple Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India

What to expect

The Brihadishwara Temple, also known as Brihadeeswara Temple, is a powerful symbol of the Chola dynasty's might and glory. The temple complex was built in just 7 years and features a Nandi Shrine, two expansive Mandapas, an Antarala, and a towering Vimana. The temple's inscriptions and frescoes vividly recount the fortunes of the city, from its ascension to its decline. The Shiva lingam, enveloped by the tower, is crafted from stones expertly bonded without mortar. Another awe-inspiring sight is the massive stone at its peak that weighs nearly 80 tons. The temple is surrounded by cloisters and its outer perimeter by heavy brick walls, with grand Gopurams serving as the sole entrances to the temple grounds

This family's experience:

Activities: We went to the Brihadishwara Temple, a magnificent 11th-century temple. We tried to go early, around 7 am. We slipped into the crowd to be blessed by the priest, admired the splendid gopuram, the praying sadhus, and the elephant having breakfast

Highlights: We were very touched by the impressive fervor and the cult of Shiva. It was a captivating experience to watch the temple "live." It was one of our most beautiful moments ✨
