The Airavatesvara Temple, located in Darasuram, Kumbakonam, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a treasure-trove of history, facts, and amazing art. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is named after 'Airavat', the majestic white elephant of Lord Indra. The temple complex is filled with rich carvings and inscriptions that narrate stories from ancient Indian Puranas. The main stone work of the building resembles a chariot, and the temple has some exquisite stone carvings, including musical steps that represent seven musical notes. Activities: We visited Darasuram Temple, with superb sculptures. We entered by a stone "chariot-staircase," and inside we discovered many bas-reliefs, almost like a comic book: battles, dances, meals... Very narrative and very fine!
Highlights: It was enjoyable to wander around this place. We loved the detailed carvings ✨
