Naharagarh Fort

Fort Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

What to expect

Nahargarh Fort stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, overlooking the city of Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh once formed a strong defence ring for the city. The fort was originally named Sudershangarh, but it became known as Nahargarh, which means 'abode of tigers'. The fort was built mainly in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the king of Jaipur, as a place of retreat on the summit of the ridge above the city. The fort has a rich history, having been used as a place of shelter for the Europeans of the region during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. It features a mix of Indo-European architectural style, with multiple gorgeous structures inside the fort, including the Madhavendra Bhawan, which has suites for the queens of Jaipur and at the head, a suite for the king himself. The fort also has a water tank and corridors lined with delicate frescoes
