Elephanta Caves

Cave Uran, Maharashtra, India

What to expect

The Elephanta Caves are a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The caves contain rock-cut stone sculptures, mostly in high relief, that show syncretism of Hindu and Buddhist ideas and iconography. The main temple's orientation as well as the relative location of other temples are placed in a mandala pattern. The carvings narrate Hindu legends, with the large monolithic 5.45 metres Trimurti Sadashiva being the most celebrated. The island has volcanic origins and is covered with forest growth and clusters of mango, tamarind, and karanj trees. The caves are a great place to visit with family and friends to learn about Hindu legends and see the beautiful sculptures
