Saxhóll

Volcanic crater Snæfellsbær, Vesturland, Iceland

What to expect

Saxhóll is a volcanic crater on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, with a useful walking path and steps making the ascent easy for visitors. The crater is approximately 100 m high and offers incredible views over the Atlantic Ocean and the expansive, dried lava fields of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It's an excellent sightseeing attraction for those who do not want to hike too far, with a low-set metal stair following the path's course to the top. The stair was awarded the Rosa Barba International Landscape Prize 2018. Saxhóll is one of the best examples of seeing a crater in Iceland that once shot hot magma from the earth, sculpting the landscape around it
