Lóndrangar

Rock formation Snæfellsbær, Vesturland, Iceland

What to expect

Lóndrangar is a pair of rock pinnacles in Iceland, volcanic plugs of basalt that have been hewn out from softer surrounding rock by erosion. At 75 and 61 meters tall, they are a singular sight, rising above and outside the ocean front. The area is home to many bird species, including black-legged kittiwake, common murre, puffin, and northern fulmar. Visitors can view the pillars from a safe distance or take a scenic walking trail to get a closer look. The Lóndrangar are remnants of a bigger crater that has mostly eroded away, and the rock in the slopes of nearby Svalþúfa is an isolated part of the original rim around the crater. The coastal area around Lóndrangar was once used as a natural harbor for fishing vessels
