Hraunfossar

Waterfall Borgarbyggð, Vesturland, Iceland

What to expect

Hraunfossar, also known as Lava Falls, is a unique and beautiful natural phenomenon where clear, cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and run as tiny waterfalls and rapids into the Hvita River. The area is surrounded by a lava field that flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the nearby glacier of Langjökull. Visitors can enjoy a viewpoint at the car park, offering an amazing view over the Lava Falls and Hvita River. The nearby area is also home to other attractions, including the waterfall Barnafoss, which is a turbulent convergence of springs and waterfalls flowing beneath a natural bridge. The settlement of Reykholt is also nearby, which has a huge history and is home to the legendary writer, chieftain, lawspeaker, and poet Snorri Sturluson. Families can explore the area through a series of trails, boardwalks, and a bridge, allowing them to experience both Hraunfossar and Barnafoss from various lookouts
