Svartifoss, which translates to 'black waterfall' in Icelandic, is a stunning waterfall located in Skaftafell, Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. The waterfall is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. The base of the waterfall is notable for its sharp rocks, and new hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges. The unique basalt columns have inspired Icelandic architects, including the design of the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík. The waterfall is a popular sight in the park, and its natural amphitheater is roughly 15-20 meters high and 30 meters wide. The columns' vertical faces are marked by regular horizontal grooves, and the rock comprises interlocking networks of plagioclase crystals that contribute to the strength and regularity of the columns
