What to expect
The Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck is a mysterious and surreal destination located on a black sand beach in southern Iceland. The site features the remains of a Douglas C-117D aircraft that crashed in 1973 due to severe icing conditions. Fortunately, all seven crew members survived the accident. The plane's fuselage has remained relatively intact since the crash and has become a popular tourist attraction. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking, with pitch-black volcanic sand and incredible scenery that makes it look like something from another planet. Visitors can hike to the site, which takes about an hour, and explore the plane wreckage. The area is also known for its dramatic and cool waves, and the nearby ocean is within walking distance. However, visitors are advised to be cautious, especially during winter or bad weather, as the conditions can be challenging
