What to expect

Laugarvatnshellir Cave is a unique place where people lived in the early 20th century. The cave has two chambers and was formed by natural erosion of soft palagonite tuff rock. A young couple, Indriði Guðmundsson and Guðrún Kolbeinsdóttir, moved into the cave in 1910 and lived there for 11 months. Later, another couple, Jón Þorvarðarson and Vigdís Helgadóttir, lived in the cave from 1918-1922 and had three children, two of whom were born in the cave. The cave has been rebuilt to look like it did when the last cave people lived there and offers guided tours. Visitors can explore the cave and learn about the story of the people who lived there, as well as see the surroundings and relax in the Cave Café
