Öræfajökull is a stratovolcano located in Iceland, and it is the highest peak in the country, forming the highest peak of Iceland, called Hvannadalshnjúkur. The volcano has a 12km2 caldera and is almost completely covered by the Vatnajökull glacier. It has only erupted twice during the last 1100 years, with the former eruption in 1362 being the largest explosive eruption in Iceland in historical time. The area surrounding the volcano is now embellished with lush fields and woods between glacial floodplains, and visitors can explore several glacier lagoons, including Jökulsárlón, and hiking trails in extraordinary landscapes. In winter, visitors may spot wild reindeer, and in summer, they can visit puffins on a guided tour of cape Ingólfshöfði
