Grjótagjá

Cave Skútustaðahreppur, Norðurland Eystra, Iceland

What to expect

Grjótagjá is a small lava cave located near Lake Mývatn in north Iceland, famous for featuring a beautiful geothermal hot spring in its depths. The cave has a rich history, having been the home of outlaw Jón Markússon in the 18th century and a popular bathing spot until the 1970s, when volcanic activity made the water too hot. Although bathing is no longer allowed, the cave's ethereal beauty has made it a popular destination, including being featured in the TV series Game of Thrones. The cave is easily accessible via a short, rocky path from Dimmuborgir, making it a great stop for families to explore and imagine what it would be like to bathe in its cozy waters
