Hallgrímskirkja is a Protestant Lutheran parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland, and the largest church in the country. It is known for its distinctively curved spire and side wings, and has become an important symbol for Iceland's national identity. The church is named after the Icelandic poet and cleric Hallgrímur Pétursson and is situated on a hilltop near the centre of Reykjavík, making it visible from throughout the city. The church's design is similar to the expressionist architecture of Grundtvig's Church in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is meant to resemble the trap rocks, mountains, and glaciers of Iceland's landscape. Inside the church, visitors can light a candle for a deceased family member, and the church also features a statue of Jesus and a viewing deck with views of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains
