Aurora Borealis

Phenomenon Reykjavik, Höfuðborgarsvæðið, Iceland

What to expect

Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural phenomenon that can be witnessed in Iceland, particularly in the region of Höfuðborgarsvæðið, near the city of Reykjavik. The Northern Lights are generated in the upper atmosphere as it gets bombarded by electronically charged particles from the sun, forming 'auroral belts' around the geomagnetic poles. They can be seen in a variety of colors and intensity, either twirling gently in shades of milky green or blazing in a wild and multi-colored dance across the night sky. The best time to see the Northern Lights is during the winter months when the sky is clear and dark. There are many tour operators in Reykjavik that offer specialized trips to witness this phenomenon, including boat tours and coach trips. Visitors can also check the aurora forecast to optimize their chances of seeing the Northern Lights

This family's experience:

Activities: We went on an excursion with a super jeep to see the Northern Lights! The guide picked us up at the hotel and drove us 45 minutes into the hills. We enjoyed the magical return in the mountains on "tracks" before returning to civilization. The excursion lasted about 3 to 4 hours, with hot chocolate

Highlights: The children adored the 4x4! It was magical to see the green lights in the starry night sky. We took pictures, and it was fun to illuminate ourselves with a flashlight for a guaranteed effect! ✨
