Brennisteinsalda

Mountain Iceland

What to expect

Brennisteinsalda is a volcano in the south of Iceland, known for its vibrant colors, including green from mosses, black and blue from lava and ashes, and red from iron in the earth. The mountain is still visibly an active volcano with hot sulphur springs and vapour at its sides. The hiking trail Laugavegur passes by, and in front of it, there is an obsidian lava field. The volcano's name, which means 'sulphur wave' in English, comes from the sulphur spots that have colored its sides. The area is a popular destination for hikers, with the Brennisteinsalda hike being a top choice, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape
