Breiðamerkurjökull

Glacier Iceland

What to expect

Breiðamerkurjökull is an outlet glacier of the larger glacier of Vatnajökull and a piedmont glacier in the southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. It emerges as a tongue of the Vatnajökull and ends in two lagoons, the famous Jökulsárlón and the smaller Breiðárlón. The glacier has been retreating over time, and as the icebergs break away from the tongue of the glacier, they drift slowly to the mouth of the lagoon and eventually join the ocean. The location has been used for many films and commercials, including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, where the glacier was used as a stand-in for Siberia. The glacier's retreat has formed a proglacial lake, Jökulsárlón, which has grown larger over the years and is now about 200 meters deep. The area is a unique and breathtaking destination, with floating icebergs and a stunning landscape

A glacier tour on Breiðamerkurjökull with Glacier Adventure in the south of Iceland
This family's experience:

Activities: We went on a glacier tour with Glacier Adventure to Breiðamerkurjökull, a part of the Vatnajökull glacier. We prepared at the Glacier Adventure Basecamp, got our equipment and were driven to the glacier. We walked on the glacier with crampons and ice axes. We visited multiple ice caves

Highlights: The blue ice was amazing. The children loved exploring the different ice caves and seeing the various colors of the ice, from crystal clear white to deep blue. We were "in the ice and went until the darkest point down" ✨
