The museum runs five branch museums, including the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum, Law Uk Folk Museum, Fireboat Alexander Grantham Exhibition Gallery, and Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum. The museum has a permanent exhibition that showcases the history and development of Hong Kong, with exhibits on the natural environment, folk culture, and historical development of the region
