Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan is a stunning lake located in the highlands of Guatemala, surrounded by culturally rich Maya towns and three volcanos - San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán. The lake is approximately 5,000 feet above the ocean and is known for its teal-colored freshwater, volcanic formations, hot springs, and a flooded Maya city. The 12 towns surrounding the lake each have something to offer, including hiking, scuba diving, visiting hot springs, and exploring Maya textile co-ops. The local Tz'utujil Maya people have a strong presence in the area, and the region is home to a variety of flora and fauna. The department of Sololá, where the lake is located, has a subtropical highland climate with dry, cold winters and rainy, cool summers. The area is mountainous and has a 'healthy' climate, with temperatures warming further south.
