Thermopylae is a narrow pass in central Greece, known for its hot sulfur springs and its role in ancient history. The pass is situated near the city of Lamia and is the site of the famous Battle of Thermopylae, where a small Greek force led by King Leonidas defended against the invading Persian army. The area is dominated by the coastal floodplain of the Spercheios river and is surrounded by sloping forested limestone mountains. Visitors can see a modern-day monument to King Leonidas and the hill where the epitaph to the fallen is engraved in stone. The hot springs from which the pass derives its name still exist close to the foot of the hill
