Mykonos windmills

Windmill Mykonos, Notio Aigaio, Greece

What to expect

The Mykonos windmills are an iconic feature of the Greek island of Mykonos. The windmills can be seen from every point of the village of Mykonos and are the first thing seen when coming into the harbour of Alefkandra. Most windmills face towards the North where the island's climate sources its strongest winds over the largest part of the year. There are currently 16 windmills on Mykonos, of which seven are positioned on a landmark hill in Chora. They were primarily used to mill wheat and were an important source of income for the inhabitants. The architecture of each of them is similar, all have a round shape, white colour and a pointed roof and very small windows. One of these windmills has been transformed into a museum, where visitors can learn about the island's traditional agricultural methods and the entire flour-making process. The windmills are a great spot to relax and enjoy the view, and the nearby area of Little Venice offers charming, picturesque neighbourhoods with colourful, Venetian-style houses and stunning sunset panoramas

This family's experience:

Activities: We strolled in Mykonos in the morning looking for an isolated windmill or a pelican on the city harbor. We got lost in the maze of pedestrian streets

Highlights: It was charming! We loved exploring the town early in the morning, discovering hidden gems, and the kids enjoyed the freedom of the pedestrian streets ✨
