Nekromanteion of Acheron

Archaeological site Fanari, Ipeiros, Greece

What to expect

The Nekromanteion of Acheron is an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone. It is located near the northwestern shores of Lake Acherousia, at the point where the rivers of Hades, Acheron and Cocytus, meet. The site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead. The faithful came here to talk with their dead ancestors, and the temple was used for elaborate ceremonies and rituals. The site includes a ziggurat-like temple, a central courtyard, and a series of meandering corridors. The acoustics of the underground hall are remarkable, and the site has been compared to an imposing funerary monument. Visitors can explore the ruins and learn about the history and mythology of the site

This family's experience:

Activities: We decided to visit the Nekromanteion of Acheron, which is believed to be the entrance to the Underworld, departing at 7:30 am and returning at 9:45 am. We spent 30 minutes there. We offered something in the walls' cracks

Highlights: It was a short visit, but we had to see it. After having seen the Center of the World in Delphi, we couldn't pass up this opportunity ✨
