Katholiko Monastery, also known as Monastery of St John the Hermit, is a historic monastery located in the Akrotiri peninsula of Crete, Greece. The monastery is considered to be one of the oldest in Crete, with some sources dating it back to the 6th or 7th century. The monastery is situated in a wild and beautiful landscape, within the Avlaki gorge, and can be reached by a 30-40 minute walk from the Gouverneto Monastery. The monastery features a cave where St John the Hermit is said to have lived, and the cave is over 100 meters long and covers an area of 1,500 sq.m. The monastery and its surroundings offer a unique and peaceful experience, with opportunities to explore the gorge, visit the nearby sea, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Visitors should be prepared for a hike and bring necessary supplies, such as water and closed shoes, as there is no shade or water available on the way
