Cape Sounion

Historical site Lavreotiki, Attiki, Greece

What to expect

Cape Sounion is a promontory at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, featuring the Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. The temple is perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the Aegean sea, and offers a spectacular view of the sunset. The site has a rich history, with archaeological finds dating back to 700 BC, and was an important strategic point in ancient times, controlling the sea passage to the Aegean Sea and Piraeus. The area is also home to a National Park, which was founded in 1971 and features a pine forest, herbaceous plants, and a variety of minerals. Visitors can explore the temple, the national park, and enjoy the stunning views of the Aegean Sea

ATHENS with family, Athens with children
This family's experience:

Activities: We went to Cape Sounion to admire a magnificent temple. The location facing the sea is splendid, and the Temple of Poseidon is very well preserved. We told the kids the story of how Aegeus threw himself into the sea from there

Highlights: We enjoyed the beautiful temple. We also took some time to play on the beach. The view at sunset is amazing! ✨
