Schnarcherklippen

Rock formation Wernigerode, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany

What to expect

The Schnarcherklippen, also known as the 'snoring cliffs', are a unique rock formation in the Harz mountains of Germany. The two rock towers, standing about 20 meters apart, are made of granite and contain magnetite, which causes compass needles to be deflected from magnetic north. When the wind blows from the southeast, the rocks produce a strange sound, similar to snoring, which is the origin of their name. The cliffs are about 25 and 28 meters high and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and hills, including the Barenberg, Wurmberg, and Brocken. Visitors can climb the rocks using iron ladders and enjoy the panoramic views. The Schnarcherklippen are also mentioned in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's famous work 'Faust', adding to their cultural significance. The area surrounding the cliffs is a popular hiking destination, with several trails offering varying levels of difficulty and scenic views
