What to expect

Ferropolis, also known as the 'city of iron', is an open-air museum showcasing huge mid-20th century industrial machines. The museum is located on the site of a former strip mining operation and features machines that can measure up to 30 meters high and 120 meters long, and weigh up to 1,980 tons. Visitors can explore the museum and learn about the history of the machines and the mining operation. The area is also used for various events such as music festivals and opera performances. The museum offers guided tours, including a special 'Bagger im Licht' tour, and has a unique setting that is appreciated by many artists. The Ferropolis-Arena, surrounded by the giant machines, can accommodate up to 25,000 visitors

Activities: We explored Ferropolis with a guided tour, climbing on the Medusa excavator and visiting the power station museum. We also climbed the Gemini excavator. In the evening we enjoyed a barbecue at the campsite

Highlights: The children were impressed by the giant machines from the former brown coal mine. "The view from above the island and the lake" was amazing. Camping under the giant excavators made it a unique experience ✨
