Nienhagen is a municipality in the Rostock district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The municipality lies on the Baltic Sea coast between the oldest German seaside spa of Heiligendamm and Warnemünde. Large parts of the municipal territory are forested, including the Nienhagen Wood, also known as Ghost Wood, which is a mixed forest with beech and oak trees shaped by the sea winds. The forest has a unique appearance, especially at twilight and in the mist, with twisted, snake-like branches. A footpath with coastal views runs behind the sea cliffs, and below the cliffs are beaches of fine sand, suitable for bathing, as well as piles of scree and large glacial erratics. A mile off the coast is the Nienhagen Artificial Reef, used for research
