Kloster Möllenbeck

Monastery Rinteln, Lower-Saxony, Germany

What to expect

Kloster Möllenbeck is a medieval monastery complex in Rinteln, Germany. The complex has survived wars, reformation, and desecration, and today it is considered a unique medieval monument. The monastery features a three-nave hall church built in 1505, rectangular windows, a choir section, and a sacristy extension set within thick stone walls. Two round towers and a crypt from the Ottonian period are the only structures that survived a great fire in 1474. The site is suitable for families, with a children's playground and a café and beer garden in the courtyard. Guided tours are available, and the monastery is accessible for people with disabilities. The complex is also the 'destination point' of the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route and offers a variety of activities and events, including the Irish Folk Festival at Möllenbeck Monastery

This family's experience:

Activities: We went on a bike tour and visited Kloster Möllenbeck. We walked around the old walls and looked at the church from the outside. Unfortunately, the monastery buildings themselves were not open to visitors. We learned about its history using Wikipedia

Highlights: The kids were excited to see the Rundtürme (round towers). We were a little disappointed that we couldn't see much of the monastery itself, but we looked forward to visiting Café Hofgarten ✨
