Dinosaur Footprints

Geological formation Obernkirchen, Lower-Saxony, Germany

What to expect

The Dinosaur Footprints in Obernkirchen, Germany, is a unique site featuring countless footprints of different dinosaurs. The footprints are preserved in the Obernkirchen Sandstone, a geological unit in Lower Saxony, and date back to the Early Cretaceous period, around 140 million years ago. The site was once a mixture of swamps, lagoons, and river deltas, and the dinosaurs that left their tracks here include quadrupedal, heavily-armored ankylosaurs, long-necked sauropods, bipedal herbivores, and carnivores. Visitors can see the tracks of these ancient creatures, including those of the Iguanodon, a herbivorous dinosaur that likely lived in herds. The site provides a glimpse into the life habits and locomotion of these fascinating creatures, and is a great place for families to learn about and explore the history of dinosaurs

This family's experience:

Activities: We went to see the dinosaur footprints. We drove about ten minutes outside of Obernkirchen into the forest. It was another two kilometers walk from the parking area. The area has information boards and some mining relics

Highlights: We went to see the impressive footprints in the stone and we learned a lot about dinosaurs. There is also a stone plate with dinosaur tracks next to the church ✨
