Hitzacker is a town in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district of Lower Saxony, Germany, situated on the river Elbe. The town has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to around 3000 B.C. Hitzacker became an important trading centre and was founded as a town in 1258. The town is located on the German Timber-Frame Road and is part of the Samtgemeinde of Elbtalaue. The nearby Elbe valley water meadows and the Elbe Heights offer a unique landscape, with the hill of Weinberg providing a panoramic view over the Elbe valley depression. Hitzacker has several villages and settlements, including Bahrendorf, Grabau, and Harlingen. The town's library was founded by Augustus the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and was later moved to Wolfenbüttel
