Rotes Moor

Moor Gersfeld (Rhön), Hesse, Germany

What to expect

The Rotes Moor is a high moor in the Hessische Rhön, and it is the second-largest high moor in the Rhön. It is part of the Biosphärenreservat Rhön and the Natura 2000 network. The moor has been damaged due to 175 years of peat extraction, but renaturation efforts have been underway since 1979. The area is home to various flora and fauna, and it is a popular destination for hiking and nature exploration. The DSV-Nordic-Aktiv-Park and Loipenzentrum am Roten Moor offer activities for visitors. The Rotes Moor is also close to other family-friendly attractions, such as the Wildpark Gersfeld and the Fulda river, which offers scenic views and outdoor activities

Family holidays in the Rhön: Hiking with children

Family holidays in the Rhön: Hiking with children
This family's experience:

Activities: We walked the Naturlehrpfad, a 3 km loop, including a wooden walkway. We also enjoyed the Karpatenbirkenwald. The path leads to a former peat extraction area, where the typical plants of a lowland moor are now spreading again, as well as a small observation tower. There is a rest area with picnic tables

Highlights: We particularly liked the Karpatenbirkenwald, which reminded us of Estonia and Finland. The Rastplatz at the end was good for a picnic ✨
