St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's Church, also known as the 'Michel', is one of Hamburg's five Lutheran main churches and a prominent landmark of the city. The church is a baroque gem and one of the most famous churches in Hamburg. It features a 132-metre high spire covered with copper, which is a significant feature of the city skyline and was a navigation aid for ships sailing on the river Elbe. The church has a Latin cross plan and offers 2,500 seats, making it the largest church in Hamburg. It boasts five different organs, including a Marcussen organ and a large Steinmeyer organ. The centrepiece of the church interior is a 20-metre-high altar, and the church also has a crypt where 2,000 people have found their final resting places.
