Elbtunnel

Tunnel Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany

What to expect

The Elbtunnel, also known as the St. Pauli Elbtunnel or Alter Elbtunnel, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg that spans 426 meters. The tunnel is a technical sensation, with two 6-meter diameter tubes connecting central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. The tunnel walls are decorated with glazed terra cotta ornaments displaying items related to the Elbe river. The tunnel is a popular tourist attraction and has been featured in several films and music videos. It is also used by locals to explore the remote corners of the port area and to get to Wilhelmsburg or Altes Land. The observation platform south of the river offers magnificent panoramic views of the city

Hamburg, your pearls

Hamburg, your pearls
This family's experience:

Activities: We went to the old Elbtunnel! "We ste[pped] the hölzerne Treppe hinab, die sich an braun gekachelten Wand des runden Aufzugturms entlang hinab windet." After walking through the tunnel "schnellen Schrittes, um warm to werden", we arrived on the other side

Highlights: The steel car elevators and wooden doors are a real sensation. The little one was eager to "endlich unter dem Fluss durchlaufen", or finally walk under the river! ✨
