The Grimnitzsee is a large, shallow lake located in the northern part of the Barnim district, near the town of Joachimsthal. It was formed during the Weichsel ice age as a glacial lake. The lake has a surface area of 7.83 km² and a maximum depth of 10.3 meters. It is fed by several small streams and has no natural outlet, but is connected to the Werbellinsee lake via a canal. The lake is part of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and is home to a variety of plant and animal species. The water quality of the lake has improved in recent years due to the cessation of fish and duck farming, as well as improved wastewater treatment. However, the lake is still considered to be in an unsatisfactory ecological state. The lake's beach is considered to be of excellent quality, but there is a risk of contracting skin infections
