Pfaueninsel, or Peacock Island, is a 67-hectare island in the River Havel with a fairytale-like atmosphere. The island features a small summer palace built for King Frederick William II and his mistress Wilhelmine Enke, as well as an English garden with exotic trees and plants. Visitors can explore the island's woodland, lawns, and fields, and see the free-roaming peacocks that give the island its name. The island also has a menagerie with various animals, including water buffaloes. The palace on the island was built in a romantic ruin style and features a classicistic Great Hall. The island is a popular destination for day-trippers and is part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin UNESCO World Heritage Site
