Marienplatz is a central square in the city centre of Munich, Germany, and has been the city's main square since 1158. The square is dominated by the New Town Hall on the north side and the Old Town Hall on the east side. In the centre of the square is the Mariensäule, a Marian column erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. The column is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary, and the base of the column features four putti fighting different beasts, symbolizing the city's overcoming of adversities. Visitors can enjoy the historic carillon in the tower of the New Town Hall, which sounds twice a day, and explore the surrounding pedestrian zone, which offers numerous shops and restaurants. The square is also a popular meeting place and hosts various events throughout the year, including the Christkindlmarkt, a traditional Christmas market. Families can enjoy the scenic viewpoints from the tower of the New City Hall or the Church of St. Peter, and explore the nearby Viktualienmarkt and Frauenkirche
