The fortified town of Mont-Dauphin, built by Vauban from 1693, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is an unusual village with 170 residents living in an extraordinary mountain scenery. The town has pink marble walls, barracks, bartizans, a powder store, and an arsenal. Visitors can observe the strategic valleys junction, the Queyras mountains, and the Ecrins range from the rampart. The town is an outstanding ensemble of buildings, including an arsenal, powder magazines, barracks, and a church. It was built to accommodate 2000 soldiers and as many civilians, and its construction was completed in the 19th century. The site has never been besieged and has only come under fire once, in 1940
