The Calanques are a unique geological formation of limestone, forming steep and narrow valleys inland and big rocky coves. The Calanques National Park is a protected area, stretching over 20 km from Marseille to Cassis, with 26 Calanques of various sizes. The Calanques have a rich history, with the 'Cassis stone' being used to build Mediterranean ports, and today being used to make decorative objects and souvenirs. The area is also home to submarine springs, which are mysterious rivers of fresh water. Visitors can explore the Calanques on foot, by boat, or by land, and can enjoy the stunning scenery and diverse wildlife, including underwater flora and fauna
