It is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) Association. The town has a rich history, with fortifications built by the counts of Conflent at the end of the 9th century and later adapted by Vauban, the military engineer of Louis XIV. The town's defensive walls, the Fort Libéria, and the Cova Bastera cave are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
