Fort Liberia

Fort Villefranche-de-Conflent, Occitanie, France

What to expect

Fort Liberia is a fortification located in Villefranche-de-Conflent, France. It was built by Vauban in 1681 and is a masterpiece of ingenious design, closely fitting the mountainous relief. The fort could accommodate a garrison of 50 to 100 soldiers and has exceptional views over the valleys and the majestic Canigou from its rampart walkway. Inside, there are barracks, a chapel, and its crypt, as well as a cistern with a capacity of 70,000 liters. The fort is linked to the medieval town of Villefranche-de-Conflent by a 765-step staircase. Visitors can explore the ramparts, counterscarp galleries, and underground prisons, and see historical reconstructions, a bread oven, and gunboats
