Cirque de Gavarnie

Mountain Gavarnie-Gèdre, Occitanie, France

What to expect

The Cirque de Gavarnie is a breathtaking natural site in the Pyrenees National Park, with a 1700m high wall that's 14km in circumference. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Pyreneism, a cultural and sporting movement that explores the mountain's nature and culture. The site offers various activities such as hiking, horse riding, skiing, and snowshoeing, and is surrounded by mountains over 3000m high. The nearby village of Gavarnie is a stage on the Santiago de Compostela routes and has a parish church listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The Pont d'Espagne, a former pastoral route, is now a start point for rambling through forests, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. The Gaube Lake can be reached by taking the ski lift or walking the GR10 trail, offering impressive views of the Vignemale, the highest peak in the French Pyrenees
