It is one of the oldest lighthouses in France, built between 1584 and 1611, and is still in operation today. The lighthouse is known for its unique architecture, with a circular tower that tapers towards the top, and its rich history, having been classified as a Monument Historique in 1862. It has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. The lighthouse is also known as the 'Versailles of the sea' and the 'phare des rois' due to its grandeur and historical significance.
