The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II cemetery and memorial located in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France. It honors American troops who died in Europe during World War II and is the final resting place for 9,388 American military dead, most of whom were killed during the D-Day landings and ensuing military operations. The cemetery covers 172.5 acres and features a memorial with maps and details of the Normandy landings, a bronze statue called 'Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves,' and a chapel. The site also includes the Walls of the Missing, which bear the names of 1,557 Americans whose remains were not found or identified. A visitor center is also located on site, which pays homage to the courage and skill of those who conducted Operation Overlord and ensured Europe's liberation
