Petite Venise

Neighborhood Colmar, Grand Est, France

What to expect

La Petite Venise is a picturesque area in Colmar, located along the Lauch river. The name 'Petite Venise' comes from the original alignment of houses on both sides of the river, which serves the southeast of the city. This district starts behind the Koïffhus, passes through the fishmonger's district, and goes to the bridges Turenne and Saint-Pierre. It is at the beginning of the Krutenau, whose etymology refers to places of market gardening on the outskirts of towns. Originally inhabited by a rural community of wine-producers, market gardeners, and boatmen, the Krutenau stretches out around the Turenne Street. The area is known for its charming half-timbered houses, colorful facades, and typical Alsatian architecture. Visitors can take a boat ride along the Lauch river and enjoy the scenic views of the area. The Petite Venise is also home to several historic buildings, including the Koïfhus, a medieval warehouse, and the Place de l'Ancienne Douane, which features a statue of Lazare de Schwendi
