Altkirch is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace in north-eastern France. The town is traditionally regarded as the capital of Sundgau. Its name comes from the German 'Alte Kirche' ('old church'). The town has several historic monuments, including the 19th-century Church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, and retains parts of the defensive ramparts that once completely encircled Altkirch. The town has a population of around 5,500 inhabitants and is situated in an attractive location, developed on a raised hill which was once the site of a castle, destroyed in the 17th century
