Corte is a town in the Haute-Corse department, on the island of Corsica, France. The town is situated on a precipitous rock overhanging the confluence of the Tavignano and Restonica rivers. The early 15th-century citadel, built by the Aragonese viceroy Vincentello d’Istria, is on the summit of the rock. Corte was the seat of the government of Pasquale Paoli, the Corsican patriot, from 1755 to 1769. It is an administrative and service centre in the middle of the island and has been the seat of the university since 1981. The citadel of Corte is an exceptional site in Europe, with three levels of defense, and features a Vauban-style fortification. The town also has a university and is home to the Museum of Corsica. Corte has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with 52 summer days and 56 frost days
