Bonifacio

Town Bonifacio, Corsica, France

What to expect

Bonifacio is a town located on the southern tip of the island of Corsica, France. It is situated on a narrow limestone peninsula that parallels the coast and forms a natural harbor. The town has a rich history, having been founded in 828 CE as a defense against pirates and later taken by the Genoese in the 12th century. Today, Bonifacio is an important coastal resort with a yachting harbor and a small commercial port. The town is known for its stunning white limestone cliffs, sculpted into unusual shapes by the ocean, and its picturesque old town, or 'vieille ville', which is located on the site of a 9th-century citadel. The citadel has been reconstructed and renovated many times and now serves as a museum. The surrounding area is also home to the Strait of Bonifacio, a nature reserve that protects the strait and its wildlife. The town's unique location, closer to the capital cities of 20 other countries in Europe and Africa than its own, Paris, makes it an interesting and culturally rich destination for visitors
