Locmariaquer

City Locmariaquer, Brittany, France

What to expect

Locmariaquer is a small port town situated in the southern Morbihan department of Brittany, on a peninsula to the south of Auray and east of Carnac. It is at the end of the northern 'peninsula' that forms the entrance to the Morbihan Gulf. The town is famous for its megalithic monuments, including the Fairies’ Stone, a huge broken standing stone, and the Merchants’ Table, composed of three carved slabs and 17 supporting stones. Locmariaquer is also known for its oyster production, with the town being one of the most important oyster-producing areas in France. The town has a pleasant harbour, a church, and a chapel, as well as a number of traditional streets and houses to explore. Visitors can also stroll along to the Pointe de Kerpenhir, the peninsula at the entrance to Morbihan Gulf, which offers a calm viewpoint and a historic military importance

This family's experience:

Activities: We visited the megalithic site in Locmariaquer, which includes the famous broken menhir, the Table des Marchands dolmen, and the Er Grah tumulus. We were particularly impressed by the broken menhir, which stood at an impressive 18 meters tall before it broke

Highlights: The kids loved exploring the dolmen, particularly the narrow entrance and the engraved stones inside. They were also fascinated by the size of the broken menhir, and enjoyed learning about its history ✨
