Couvent de la Grande Chartreuse

Monastery Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France

What to expect

The Grande Chartreuse is a monastery and the mother house of the Carthusian Order, located in the Isère department of France. It is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains, providing a peaceful and isolated environment for the monks. The monastery has a long history dating back to the 11th century and has been rebuilt and expanded over the years. Today, it is still an active monastery with around 30 monks living and working there. Visitors can explore the surrounding area and enjoy the beautiful scenery, but the monastery itself is not open to the public. A museum is located nearby, which offers insight into the life and history of the Carthusian Order
