The Hautes Chaumes du Forez is a natural site located in the Massif Central, characterized by vast plateaus of altitude, landes, and tourbières. The area has been shaped by centuries of pastoralism, with a history dating back to the Roman era. The site features jasseries, small stone houses with thatched or tiled roofs, which were used as summer shelters for families and livestock. The Hautes Chaumes are home to a diverse range of flora, including graminées, callune, myrtille, and genêt poilu, as well as fauna such as cows, particularly the local Ferrandaises breed. The site is classified as a zone of natural interest and is part of the Natura 2000 network.
